Ray Victor on Amy Sultan’s Vision
Victor recounted his first meeting with Amy Sultan at the Taksim Center’s second-anniversary celebration, where he learned about her impressive career, goals, and vision.
He noted, “Amy is determined to change the public’s stereotypical view of dancers. This inspired us to feature her in outfits different from traditional dance costumes. The interview explored her work on a UNESCO project and other aspects of her life, highlighting her personality beyond her dancing, which I greatly admire and respect.”
Who Is Amy Sultan?
Ami Sultan is the founder of the first belly dancing institute accredited by UNESCO and the International Dance Council. Her mission is to have Egyptian belly dancing recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.
Amy emphasized that everyone has their own artistic preferences. Whether in music, dance, or acting, and that audiences are free to choose what they enjoy. She added, “Those who want to attend dance performances will buy the ticket and come.”
She further explained that art is a personal choice, not a requirement like education. Sultan pointed out that Egypt leads the world in oriental dance. She aims to change its name to “local dance” to reflect its Egyptian roots. She also designs her own costumes and works with ateliers for production, proudly stating, “I purchase 14 dance costumes every season.”
